a soundtrack for all of you hi-tech vagabonds, you godless drifters, deprived of past and present. the seductive spell of artificiality and its inherent promise of tomorrow’s bliss. indecipherable messages from another species – future faux amis. familiar vocal fragments speak to us in foreign tongues, languages still to be invented. the false promise of linear progress as it shatters, hitting the barrier of sound. unseen geometries dressed in the most basic of rhythmic patterns – simple structures of hidden symmetries.

somatic exorcism via hyper realistic surfaces of binary noise. dead ideas are crushed by feet, dancing the dance of brutal elegance. dead tissue is being torn off in radical body movements. a projection of the metahuman horizon, an exercise in shedding the exoskeleton. »neuer mensch« (»new human«) is the relentless, visceral expression of metamorphosis.

The shop was the second in a new series of exhibitions at e-flux project space at 41 essex street, lower level. bender and nicolai's installation "white line light" provided lighting for the shop via a handmade, neon gas-filled tube that reacted to raster-noton compositions.

comprised of publications (featuring raster-noton's distinct approach to graphic design), music cds (to be displayed as physical objects), and sound (for listening on mp3 players), the raster-noton archive offered a panoramic view of the label's output of nearly 100 releases, or 90 hours of audio material. "while their late 20th century forebears applied the aesthetics of processes and mechanisms from manufacturing and industry to their craft, so many of the raster-noton label's publications emulate the unseen operations and transactions of our era – the flow of information."()įor the shop, the archives of the chemnitz-based raster-noton label were presented at e-flux in the form of a record shop, albeit one without a commercial component. using digital signal processing as their primary medium (often in combination with moving images and graphics) the label's many releases and live performances explore minimal, modular, and concrete approaches to the structure of sound and its possibilities for being activated and manipulated as a material form. Raster-noton's investigations into sound frequencies and sequences are principally developed in the field of music, but often cross over into the visual arts. With a special performance by carsten nicolai (alva noto) and olaf bender (byetone) E-flux was pleased to present raster-noton.
